I don't have an interior button on my 2004 e60, you can open it with the a button on the key, or the soft-touch rubber button under the tailgate grip.

I asked my dealer about having a retrofit done with the interior button and was told that it was removed in Australia because it's a safety hazard.
When you pop the boot, the boot lid swings up with quite a force and the dealer reckons that it could hit someone and so it was removed. Quite silly to me, but given the society we live in today, understandable... why else would we have the lawyer screen on our iDrive?

My July build 2004 has a trunk release button. Stupid question, but are you sure that you are looking in the right place? Button should be found beside your left leg close to front hood release. Only reason I ask is because I never knew that I had it until I read about location in this forum.

Actually they could, but they are too lazy to think about it. And the re are no instructions from BMW, so they simply say it's impossible to do.
Well, Hobi can do it in 15 minutes, so all dealers should be able to do it...
