What is it, and more importantly, what should be done about it? It has gone off four times, and resets on startup. Service Advisor said they added steering fluid?? That deosn't sound right? 07' 550i sport package, no active steering

On my old car, I used to get this message once a day in cooler temperatures. It only happened when I first left my house in the morning and after the car warmed up, if I turned it off and back on again, the message went away. The solution was to add some steering fluid. It seems that it was slightly low and when it was cooler, I think the fluid "looked" lower to the sensor and triggered the message...

try topping off (or adding to) your fluid level.

My car is doing exactly what you described. Couldn't find a reference in owners manual or forum search. What is the recommende power steering fluid.

Thanks

use chf 11...it's a green kind of squared shape bottle. Got it at the dealer for $25 bucks and problem solved. It's power steering.

Common name is Pentosin and the fluid color is green as well, been used by BMW since the early '80s if not before. If one has a good relationship with dealer often they do as they often do with engine oil, top it off and give you the remainder just in case. BMW part number: 81229407758

Seems that all of you who have/had this problem are from the north.

The winter have never been a problem for my BMW's, but then
my cars has always fluids that (all) are good for - 40 C - + 40 C.
