Having done a lot of work on mirrors recently I just thought I tell people what I now know.
M5 Mirrors:
1. Pre-Sep 2005: 3 separate plugs with lots of wires. Needs a door module to work.
The plugs are divided as follows.
Plug 1 with 6 pins has the wires for the mirror adjust, heated mirror, the puddle lights and the auto-fold. Wires are missing on this depending on what feature is missing.
Plug 2 with 5 pins has all the wires for the mirror position memory and reverse tilt.
Plug 3 with 3 pins has two wires on it for auto-dim glass.
2. Post-Sep 2005: 1 plug with only 3 wires on it.
This mirror has an ECU inside which reads the messages off the LIN Bus and then in turn drives all the functions inside the mirror itself.
Normal E60 Mirrors:
1. Pre-Sep 2005:
a. If you do not have memory and EC glass then you will have only Plug 1 as in the Pre-Sep 2005 M5 mirrors.
You cannot swap any mirror motor to any mirror because the motors themselves are different depending on if they have memory or not.
b. If you have memory and/or EC glass then you will have the other plugs as in the Pre-Sep 2005 M5 mirrors.
2. Post-Sep 2005:
a. If you only have Mirrors adjust and Heated mirrors. Then you have with a plug with 4 pins on it. Here there is no ECU in the car and there is no door module. The mirrors are controlled from the Body Gateway Module directly. Again this mirror motor does not have the memory and so is different.
b. If you have more features on the car then your mirror will be like the post Sep 2005 M5 Mirrors with an ECU inside. In this case again the Body Control Module is driving the mirror but by sending commands on the LIN BUS instead of doing the work itself.
Now the best part is, if you have a Post Sep 2005 a. variant you can very easily change that into a Pre-Sep 2005 a. variant which does not have memory or EC glass. The only thing different is the type of plug used.
Hope this information is of some help in the future to someone.
