My Ride: 2008 Sapphire Black on Black M5 - loaded sans soft close doors
Default

I drove a 545 with AS and a 550 without AS back to back and detected no difference in road feel. I make a lot of 90 degree turns at about 15-20 mph and I just can't imagine the car without AS - I LOVE THIS FEATURE. I've been thinking about making a video (having someone video me from the back seat) on my drive home. Although I must find another person without AS in my area and then video that as well. Would be a nice comparison to show what it can do.

HOWEVER, as I mentioned in another thread, you can get used to anything. I think if you did not get it you would not notice it - but if you did get it you would love it. Just be careful, cause getting back into a non-AS car can be very scary. During a recent test drive of a vert M3 I almost crashed because I had to turn the wheel much more than I expected.

Oh and during a recent test drive of an 07 and 08 M5 I was shocked at how disconnected and overboosted the steering felt at parking lot speeds.

Just my 2 cents....

I chose to not get active steering on my 2006 550 for two reasons. It felt somewhat unnatural to me with a little less road feel. The second reason was in having multiple vehicles i found it unnerving in switching between cars. The second reasonn may be just me. I think in the end it is highly personal decision.

I love AS -- loved it on my 2004 and love it more on the 2008 car. It's much more refined now -- you almost don't even realize it's there until you drive another car.

Speaking of driving other cars without AS, it seems as if I've become used to things so much that when I drive other cars, I don't get that strange feeling anymore. I just know that after driving other cars, I always feel glad to be back in the E60...

I have Active Steering in my '07 550i and love it. I didn't realize how great it was until I brought my car in for service and got an '08 5 series without the AS. I couldn't believe the difference in the steering. The AS is much more responsive with less effort at slow speeds and still has the stability at fast/highway driving. It actually took awhile for me to get used to the non-AS steering again. I can understand the argument of mulitple vehicles both with and without and the potential problems that could cause. I would still get the AS though because it is really that good.

I am completely indecisive about this.

Would appreciate hearing from members who have the AS option and who don?t in a similarly equipped Auto.

very much pro AS. one of the most valuable options..superb sharp responses while sports driving especially in case of over steering....etc and very much parking friendly.

I didn't get it but wish I did...without it, the car feels like a big boat in a parking lot or anywhere you make slow turns specially 90 degree ones where I have to turn my steering wheel way past 90 degrees and your hands/arms get tied up. My next car will defineatly have it...if offered.

I have it on my 550 and don't have it on my X5. I definitely am a big fan now. Although it did take some time getting used to.

Cheers
