do I need to bleed the master brake cylinder?
rear brake pipes rusted and burst, all fluid leaked out, master cylinder is empty, I'm pretty sure there's air in there. After I replace the brake pipes, do I need to bleed the master cylinder? Why? What if I don't and just fill it up with brake fluid and bleed all 4 calipers? No? How difficult is it? Is there a DYI on it for the E60?

If the master cylinder emptied, so did the DSC pump. According to the shop manual, the only proper way to bleed the system after fluid loss is using a scanner that can pump/cycle the ABS in conjunction with a pressure bleeder on the master cylinder reservoir. No way to get all the air out otherwise.
