Have previously posted about my 535d that I bought privately last week that on the first day of having it went into limp home mode.

The car is now at the garage and apparently the reason for it going into 'limp home' is a leak on the transmission. (I understand this to be a reasonably common problem?)

What are peoples thoughts.....
1. The guy I bought it off (private sale) said he had never experienced the 'limp home' issue - is it possible that its coincidence or does it take some time to get to the point where the box starts to get low on oil and go into limp home mode?
2. I had an independent inspection by the AA (I know dont say it.....) - on the report it clearly states 'Clutch/Transmission - Fluid/Oil Leaks - No'. Should the AA have spotted this and do you think I have a case to challenge them?

Also as I dont know how long the box has been leaking is there a possibility of long term damage or given the fact that the car was going into limp home and not showing any other faults then it was possibly just starting to happen?

I am now concerned as whilst the work is being carried out by a reputable BMW independent there is now the issue of future problems?

Obviously, it's impossible for me to say what's going on but here are a few common sense points to consider:

- Can the BMW dealer you're using get the vehicle's service history from BMW? Doing so may enable you to learn if the issue happened in the past and who it happened to (the guy you bought it from or someone else.)

- Is the fluid leak something that is easily spotted? In other words, is it reasonable to assume that the AA guy should have seen it?

I'm not too familiar with this "reasonably common" problem to speculate any further on your issue. Hopefully someone else can chime in with better information... Good luck!
