My Ride: On Order as of May 6- 2007 530i Titanium Grey and Grey Leather, with Sport Package, Premium Pkg, Cold Pkg. 2006 Porsche Boxster
Thumbs up

Ok. I have been researching the crap out of buying winter tires/tyres for my 530i with the 18" 123s. Sorry I am boring. I like the 'factory' look and want to my car to look the same as much as possible for the winter. I am looking at buying the 123s from bmwwheels.com and the blizzaks from tirerack.com.

The thing that confounds me is the need for the Tire Pressure Monitoring system. THe only place I can find the 18" is at my dealer at $80 a pop plus labor. My SA said that most folks live with the light on all winter. I would like to avoid this.

What have most folks done here? Have they spent the cash for the TPMS? or Lived with the light? Or any alternatives would be great.

You would figure the folks at HQ would have solved this.

I had my car w RFT summer, my UHP winters are non RFT and had the message puncture at 200 so if that would be true I could not type here now :'(

But you see, so my guess is no, but I will use that for the Summers

PS: the message goes away if you stop, and leave the car in stand but engine on, then go to Idrive menu vehicle settings and RPA( it will take hell a long time to initialize your new pressure) than you can fly fwd

Tirerack also carries the sensors for $67 per side. They don't sell them online, but they will have them if you call. I recently bought a full winter package (wheels, tires and sensors) from them and the sensors came installed already.

In the US they have pressure sensors as well as the rotation TPM / RPA we have in Europe... so I suspect Nickolas's light will stay on no matter how many times he resets the TPM.

Actually I'm happy that I do not have the pressure sensors in EU, or am I?
The RPA is working fine, or is it?

Anyway Nickolas, if you have pressure sensor, you need to have them.
You could go for 225/45 18" tyres, they would be ideal for winter on 8" 123's.

Why is your nice 550i standing in the garage, joseyu???

My Ride: 07 BMW 525i Premium Package, Xenon Lighting Package, manual Transmission. Titanium Grey, 20% Tint around the back, 70% V-Kool on front. Planned mods: Style 71 wheels with Toyo Proxy 4 tires, Sachs suspension upgrade, upgraded stereo, and many more to come.

Buy them from Garry from newport (see sticky on parts/mods forum), he ships fast and since you are on the east coast it may take only a few days. I think you can get it for about $170 for all 4. by the way, labor should be free (well I mean the tire shop can install it for you with no add'l charge, but of course you still pay for mounting and balancing). don't get them from the local stealers!

heeehee, may you be interested in some 17" 138 style? comes with TPM sensors and with the stock continental you can get it for less than what you pay with the style 123 alone =P only have 4000 miles on the tires.

So am I. But Big Brother in the American department of transport has decided that direct tire pressure monitoring is needed in every new car. And so they get it. So much for "land of the free"...
