Do faulty Glowplugs cause engine light?

Hi Guys,
I recently got the engine light burning on my dash and a quick readout told me the glowplugs are faulty.
Do faulty glowplugs cause an engine light(increased emissions)?

My Ride: Bmw 530d 2004
I have one faulty glow plug, and it doesn't make the light go on. I can see it only through INPA or similar program. But it could be a faulty glow plug controller module though...
