Do BMW disel engines last longer than gas?

Okay, so big rig trucks all have disel engines and I've seen some with over 1 million miles on them!!
So besides gas mileage, are disels more durable? Are there any other advantages? I know they can put out massive torque also, but not much in the HP department.

I meant compared to the massive tourque, but you're right 272hp isn't shabby! It's a shame we don't get them here in the states.
I would have thought diesel engines would have lasted longer as they are built from heavy duty materials to handle the high compression ratio. Hence the higher kerb weight. With regard to the low power output I don't think 272bhp is low for a 3.0 litre engine. The M6 engine in the new 530i only develops 256bhp!

[/quote]In that case probably about the same lifespan. Yes there is more torque produced from a diesel engine, but at the same time the engine is heavy duty compared to a petrol unit. Oh I don't know - best to trade in after 2yrs and let some other person have the hassle

The diesel engine will outlast the car but what about the turbo(s) and the tranny? 
Diesel is good if there's ever an emergency / disaster. (When the sh*t hits the fan) The engine can run on bio-diesel and / or kerosene.
Ever notice those hot rod monster trucks with upwards of 600 to 700hp do 11 second 1/4 miles at the raceway? Talk about performance!

[/quote]Another advantage of diesel is the lower consumption compared to an as powerful petrol engine. Moreover, at least in in France and most of the european countries, there is still a small price difference between the diesel and the unleaded petrol making it cheaper.
Diesel used to produce a lot of pollution with extra small particules and were also famous for having no power but now these disadvantages are totally overcome and the 535d, with its turbos and particule filter is the proof.
About the bi-turbo on the petrol engine, tell me if I'm wrong, but the result could normally not be as efficient as with the diesel version due to the fact that the high temperature exhaust does not allow to using these variable geometry blades.

I agree with fred. Plus the diesel vs gas engine ( @ simialar power) most of the time would kill a gas engine on a highway or smth like that. I know this from my own experience. It like this many times: if the diesel has to overtake he only has to be on the right rpm to spool up the turbo and unleash the torque (wich is almost the whole rpm range) but the gas engine has to be revved hard to give performance, so overtaking for a gas engine could result in an engine brake first, just to rev the engine and move to a lower gear. So that is one of the reasons, maybe, the diesel outlasts the gas engine because of the revs. THE HIGHER THE REVS THE LESS LIFE THE ENGINE U'LL HAVE. at least thats my opinion.
