I recall seeing a post about what would be required for performing your own Progman/CIP updates, but can't locate it any more.

Has anyone actually tried this?
Or know where I can find the information on doing this.

Thanks.

Just not possible, you would need a DISPlus/GT1 or other service computer as used by a dealer.

Would any other private BMW service shops ever be able to have access to those kind of machines?

Other options besides the one BMW dealer in my town would be great.

A laptop with appropriate software and I/F i.e the hardware connection would run this. NOw it may take "gray" market access to get the software. There is a site/forum where folks are doing this. However, I lost the URL and really have not tried looking for it recently. And I believe ExGman posted this PDF on the an alternative method via internet sometime back.

Wow. Thanks. This is hopeful information. I'd love to be able to enable sat radio or the cd changer option without having to pay BMW. It looks like you only need a rs232 cable to hook up to your car...

Here is some more info:

Not really cost effective for the avg. car owner to obtain this equipment but at least it's good to know that your independent BMW servicer can get access to this vital software.
