DIY Engine air filter replacement

Anyone know what that " other " filter in the lid of airbox is. The one that says " Do Not Remove ". Does this ever need replacement.

That is a carbon filter and is used to prevent unburned vapors generated during engine heat soak (engine block super heating after shutdown) from escaping back through the intake into the atmosphere. It is a California emissions requirement but BMW decided to install them in all US bound E60s.

Removal won't give you any significant increase in power.
