I was just thinking about the V12 in the 760i-Is this the only gasoline powered engine that BMW uses direct fuel injection on? It seems like BMW's technical advances trickle down across their model line-like VANOs did as well as VALVETRONIC which is on the inline 6's and V8s. Does anyone know if BMW plans to add the direct injection feature to the 550/650/750? I think Audi's V8 is direct injection. Just curious, anyone have any insight here?

My guess is after Mercedes announce 382hp E-class. DI will increase HP to 390+ with double-vanos. So far is 360hp, and another 30hp is quite easy to achieve with DI.

Ehh, this is probably a "Homer Simpson" but doesn't the i in "530i" stands for injection? Well, then again, my engine skills are a bit far away from the typical mechanic. I thought that a carbourator throttled in the gas whereas an injection engine calculate the exact amount of fuel to be mixed with air and then injects it.

I assume that I will get an explanation from someone

If you go to Audi's FSI page
it has a very interesting flash that shows you how it works.
Direct Injection is more like an advanced version of fuel injection.
Checked it out here :

DI injects fuel directly into the combustion chamber which saves gas and increase hp.

The new Direct Injection engines are the lean mode type, the 760i doesnt run in lean mode nor does the current audi system.

To run in lean mode, thus saving 20% on fuel burn, the engine needs the correct formulation of fuel.

Most of Europe will get this fuel from beginning 2006, I hear the USA will only get it in 2007

BMW will introduce the new engine in Europe mid 2006 in the new 3 Series Coupe

The introduction of the engine into other markets will depend on when they have the correct fuel
