[QUOTE=BostonJon;1578685]funny thing i just noticed today..the chrome shrouds on my projectors actually have "D2S" embossed on them. however, my bulbs are most definitely D1S.
It would appear that someone replaced the original D2S with the incorrect D1S. My projectors also show D2S and the it what I have, 2005 545. There is no need to disassemble the projectors to determine bulb type - its marked on the projectors!![Wink](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/imported/wink.gif)

i would think you could remove the circular plastic cover on the back of your headlamp housing and determine the bulb type without removing the entire assembly from the car. you may need one of those pen mirror things (like a dentist has) to see inside the housing.

There is some writing on the top of the headlights (visible only with the hood open). In my case it includes the text "D1S / D2S", which suggests that it would indeed be possible to use either type of bulb in these lights.
I haven't gotten around yet to opening the round plastic cover behind the high beam bulb to try and see the HID low beam through the hole.

You'd need an adapter to get the D2S into the D1S hole.. so it's not like it can't be done (which is part of the 55W conversion). It's certainly possible.. the easiest sort of way is to open that cover and see if the bulb has a huge square box (D1S) which is the difference.

Um no.. the igniter is physically part of the D1S bulb, so you can't just pull it apart..
There is a ring piece that attaches the bulb to your housing, which has specific notches, so you can put the D2S bulb, but you need to get your own "adapter" to do so.. which again, is part of the conversion process.
So unless you're all set to do the conversion, you can't mix and match..
