My Ride: 2008 550iReno, NV
Model Year: 2008
My dealer called me yesterday. They just took in a used M5 with 3,125 miles. The guy who traded it in does this every year, he has to have the newest.
So, here are the problems:
I wasn?t planning on trading in my 545 until Feb ?08.
The 550i that I built up online came out to $72,545
They are asking $80,000 for the M5.
Options, 550i ?vs-M5
M5 ? No sunshades, we have a baby this is a problem
M5 ? No Sirius, little thing
M5 ? 500hp GOOD THING
M5 ? Original sticker was $87,xxx including gas guzzler.
Any input would be appreciated.

$87.000 -> $80.000 in one year. To me it sound like too much. If I only lost $7.000 in a year I would switch car all the time...

M5 Of Cos, and USD 7,500 you can get:
1)you got more hourses(Bhp) at the front, and car setting (e.g Suspension, SMG, M steering wheel....so on)
2)No additional expenses on already awesome looking and performance M5 (No mods needed)
3)You will feel sad when you saw M5 on the street (If you go for 550i)
4)Try to ask your dealer about the sunshades....you may able get one for additional costs.
5) Long term investment (Lower depreciation than normal E60 i believe)
6) Most importantly is the 'FUN' factor than normal E60 cannot match. (Just my opinion!!!)

$3,000 of the $87,xxx was the gas guzzler, so were really talking about $80,000 -vs- $84,xxx

The M would be my choice. You can always tint the windows aftermarket. The Sirius can be added in many different ways. The cost difference is understandable and IMHO very worth it. You're basically getting a new vehicle for a deep discount (think demo car). Deffo look at the tires, but anyone with an M would hopefully drive it like it should be driven. Don't let that put you off though as it is designed to take aggressive driving. Consider the difference in ride quality however. I have never driven an M5 but have driven many M3's. The ride is much harsher for everyday driving and could become less comfortable than a 550. Temper this with the fact though that I am 6'3" 230lbs, so the 3 is a little small for my frame anyway. Living in Reno, you would have a number of opportunities to "let it go"!!
Good luck in your decision, I qam sure you'll be satisfied either way.

M5 is built differently. Do you like the SMG? If so go for it in heartbeat. Its a far more exclusive car.
