Sadly, it is not loud enough!
There is a whine, depending on the RPM, but I never drive with the windows open.
If your turbo is loud, then there is probably a problem. Like a turbo failure sized problem.

The other users also seem to have a sound. Question is how to guage if this is healthy or not
I am also getting MAF error on OBD check - any one got any ideas if this could be related to a leak somewhere causing the louder sound?

My current car is a pre-LCI June 2005 218ps 3.0d auto. I just had a new Turbo fitted by BMW (- don't ask!) and I can clearly hear it whistle under both gentle and hard acceleration. To be honest, its louder than I would expect from the car, but its a new turbo so I assume its working as designed.
EDIT: My current car is remapped, not sure if that changes anything?
My previous car was an LCI 2008 525dA with the 197ps 3.0d auto, and I could only slightly hear the turbo under acceleration.

I almost never hear my turbo spool up, unless I'm in a tunnel with the windows down.
