Just looking to see whether my 530d is normal or something is wrong

Under open throttle are most diesel drivers able to hear their turbo whistling?

is that the case for all diesel owners or does this vary from car to car?

Sadly, it is not loud enough!

There is a whine, depending on the RPM, but I never drive with the windows open.

If your turbo is loud, then there is probably a problem. Like a turbo failure sized problem.

ok - well I would describe it as a 'whine' - similiar level of sound to what you would hear in a tuned scooby or supra - I had an x5 and on that you could hear the turbo but not as audiable.

The other users also seem to have a sound. Question is how to guage if this is healthy or not

I am also getting MAF error on OBD check - any one got any ideas if this could be related to a leak somewhere causing the louder sound?

i often hear a whine sound as i pull off to about 11rpms + but on idle seems to be fine, but i did have mine remapped so the paramenters were changed, but surely its a lot louder prior tpo the remap!

My current car is a pre-LCI June 2005 218ps 3.0d auto. I just had a new Turbo fitted by BMW (- don't ask!) and I can clearly hear it whistle under both gentle and hard acceleration. To be honest, its louder than I would expect from the car, but its a new turbo so I assume its working as designed.

EDIT: My current car is remapped, not sure if that changes anything?

My previous car was an LCI 2008 525dA with the 197ps 3.0d auto, and I could only slightly hear the turbo under acceleration.

Too true, Patrick.

I almost never hear my turbo spool up, unless I'm in a tunnel with the windows down.
