On a 300 km trip door to door from Paris to Bruxelles at speed varying from 120 km/h to 160 km/h (average +- 100 km/h): 8 l/100 km -> good

In trafic jam condition (average 15 -> 20 km/h): 15 l to 17 l/100 km -> dispapointed.

On country road with sport driving: 10 l/100 km.

Comparired with my former Mercedes W211 E 500 (8 cyl 5 lt): 11 l/100 km on the motorway but 20 to 22 lt in city driving

Conclusion yes diesel is better but no so much

Having bought the car new, and a new driver to diesels, I am also monitoring this closely:
Only filled the car up twice so far:
1st fill up, got a range of 360 miles and an mpg of 24mpg
2nd fill up (this still has not run out yet), but estimate a range of 540 miles and an mpg of 37 mpg. This fill up included 2 long motorway runs (c.350 miles in total).

So I think the fuel economy is getting better as the car is running in........mind you once I hit the magic 1300 miles (running in period), it's bound to get down to the mid 20's!!!

How many miles has your car done salebeemer ?..........I would have thought you have to allow for the fact that the car will not be as efficient until it is fully run in.

Cheers.

My experience with BMW diesel is that the mileage gets better after few thousand miles, up to around 6K miles. There is also a strong possibility that the computer starts to give more accurate figures after a while, being based on a "self-learning" principle.
Strange enough, I'm having better mileage now with my new 535d compared to my previous car, 530d E60. Probably the much higher torque available allows the auto tranny to keep higher gears longer and more often.
