Just been to the local $tealers to get a replacement Breather Filter (or Oil Separator if you prefer). Of course they tried to sell me the complete unit until I asked for just the Separator insert. They had both in stock.
Interestingly, I also called in for a quote for an Oil Service - I was quoted at ?99 + VAT, which, although extortionate for the work involved, is pretty reasonable I thought.
The SA said that they now change the Breather Filter every third oil service, as well as the Air and Diesel filters. Perhaps BMW are seeing the light!

The diesel and air filter are changed at every third oil change.
My local dealership called me last week and told me, that they're replacing the Diesel Engine Breather Filter at every third oil change as well.
I said "yes please" and since the oil/filter change, the fuel consumption have decreased with 10%.

I don't see why the new style breather needs changing, it's a hard plastic open shape. A good clean through would surely do the same job as a new one.
That is a decent price for a dealer oil change, I was quoted ?220 from Benham Wolverhampton about a year ago for my 525d, bought the bits myself (Castrol Edge LL04 spec) and did it for about ?110 first time and ?70 a couple of months ago.

Booked the car in yesterday.
Special offer - was for four cylinder cars only, but they've extended it to the sixes as well.
That's the basic oil service including oil/filter, but excluding microfilters if needed. Quoted ?35 to do the diesel filter at the same time. ECP are quoting ?24 + post for the filter only, so I'll let the $tealer do that at the same time, save me getting diesel over the drive!!
If anyone's in this area, it's Rybrook at Shrewsbury. (Blue Bell at Crewe (who I have used in the past and are usually reasonable) wanted ?200 + for the same job).

Brilliant thanks, definately worth driving the 40 or so miles from my place. Wolverhampton BMW STEALER wants ?170 for oil and filter change, haven't checked what Birmingham want yet.
Rang Rybrook, they said ?99+VAT, special offer that will be running for a while yet.... well worth it.
I've got 2500 miles to go before the iDrive suggests I need the oil changed. (it's been changed at 8000 remaining anyway).

I too would query changing the vortex type breather filter every 3rd service - not really necessary.
From experience, the Air filter should probably be changed more frequently - I have to leave my car outside, and I have to clear my air filter out annually as it gets clogged with dead leaves.

My E60 now needs the oil service, so called Rybrook to book it in....
"that was only for the E46 over 3 years old"..... questioned further.......
"the offer finished in mid October"
They are now quoting ?146.66 for an oil and filter change.... ?20 discount if you book online. - ?126.66.
Still better then ?164.59 at a local stealer.
