It's warm. Mine looks like that too. When it's cold lines go below 4000 rpm line.

:-) Been there unchipped at 258 on the clock and 245 on my GPS device. Above 230 it does start to get noisy - mainly wind and tyre noise though. Maybe it's a matter of surface.

From what others are posting it does seem that the 231 hp version is more refined.

sure my bratanki, but that time it was on dyno, tacho stops there, actual speed under "artififical and no counterforce was 290-300km/h, you can see that on dyno results.

All I said, since it is done, the engine is smoother and better

Then all that proves is that there's a huge variance between individual vehicles and just because yours or mine behave in a particular way, our own experience can't be projected elsewhere.

I only very occationally here the diesel clatter on start-up when very cold, other than that the 231BHP diesel is very refined and very quiet.

I guess that must have been the main reason why they went from the 218 hp to the 231 hp engine.

I love my 530d but the one thing that really bugs me is the start up clatter of the diesel. When it's warm it's not so bad but still definitely sounds like an old school diesel. A friend has an Audi A6 3.0 TDI which sounds no different to a petrol engine. Why can't the BMW sound like that too? How is it on the 231 hp cars? Did they fix it? I have the 218 hp engine.

I couldn't hear the diesel clatter because the door seals were so creaky

Seriously though - my 218bhp 530d was pretty much clatter free.

However it was LOUDER on a cold day.
