I love my 530d but the one thing that really bugs me is the start up clatter of the diesel. When it's warm it's not so bad but still definitely sounds like an old school diesel. A friend has an Audi A6 3.0 TDI which sounds no different to a petrol engine. Why can't the BMW sound like that too? How is it on the 231 hp cars? Did they fix it? I have the 218 hp engine.

I do not know 231 (265 ) but get yours remaped mine has nice soud, spec when warmed up and reved. Look normally I drive my car so there is no such noise or sound, however I think BMW has less than other brands. Mine never had the tractor sound ever, I guess soon the quads will add some more nice bass to the music

I tested a 218HP 530d and although impressed by the speed, I was not happy with the noise considering it was a 6 cylinder (I was comming from an A4 TDI tractor)

I ordered a new 2007 MY 231HP 530D (now re-mapped to 275HP ) and for 3 Months have enjoyed the smooth sound and brilliant performance. It is way much better than the 218 I tested - much quieter, faster and smoother.

Get a 231HP It is worth it

We have a 218 HP 530d too, and when it's cold it does really sound like a diesel... But when it's warm I don't think it's that bad

The 3.0 TDI (Audi) is quieter than the BMW 3-liter diesel, but it's slower, and it revs a lot more... I drove a A6 3.0TDI Quattro (Avant) almost 800 kilometers one day, and at 200 km/h it revs 3500 rpm's.... Our 530dA revs 2800 rpm at that speed, and it is so quiet in that speed. In the A6 at 160-200 km/h you could really hear the engine. The new Audi Q7 3.0 TDI revs even more

Diesel clatter on 530d-img_3757b.jpg
has no diesel sound, but when tracking it is so funny/annoying you have no V8 or V10 sound when falling in a hard turn just silence and some tires.

:-) Been there unchipped at 258 on the clock and 245 on my GPS device. Above 230 it does start to get noisy - mainly wind and tyre noise though. Maybe it's a matter of surface.

From what others are posting it does seem that the 231 hp version is more refined.

Hmmm... looking at the engine temperature gradations on the rev counter that looks like a cold engine...

I did drive the 218 hp and the noice is a bit disturbing when the engine is cold.

But after it warmed up, I could not hear it inside...

But even the warm engine sounds raw when ideling (if you stand outside the car).
