The chatter of my dad's 525d got much louder lately. I don't think it's because of the falling temperatures (we have now about 18?C).
Does anyone know why? Maybe something got broken....

Could be the oil level? Might be worth checking it to see if it is lower than usual?

You're right! It does seem to get louder/more noticeable the more miles on the clock. I've noticed this with both my previous car and current car. The funny thing is my wife has an X5 3.0d and the engine noise whilst driving sounds superb with no clank to heard. Cant quite make out it why unless it has different sound deadening. ![Think](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/imported/think.gif)

I bet that the x5 engine looses less oil than yours. I have had cars which need regular topsups and others which do not need a drop. Just a thought...

A diesel engine will get louder when it's cold! During the winter our diesel sounds very "diesel like" when the engine is cold.. When the engine is warm, it sounds normal again
We have 89,000 km's on clock, and the sound from the engine is the same as it was brand new

I have a solution for you sese! Turn up the radio until you can no longer hear the engine!

No, let's be serious. I checked the oil just now and noticed the oil being only half full. Though the car was at the dealer to be inspected 6,000 km ago

Does anyone know if this is normal? Does it really need so much oil?
