I like Shell best too.

However you never know what you are getting anyway, Shell garages often fill up with BP diesel and vice versa, depends where you live as to what you get.

Thanks for the input guys.
Looks like I'll stick with Shell then. It's my most accessible station anyway.
I have BP nearby also, but not quite as convenient.

Or buy heating oil and use that, 28 second stuff, costs around 22p a litre at the moment and if you mix it 50/50 it will be fine, I have a friend who has done 50k miles on it in his 2002 320d auto Touring.

I always used BP Ultimate in my 535d. Got a BP Station at the end of the road & I guess it's slightly better quality than the Supermarket stuff.

There was an article about this (in respect of petrol at least) in EVO recently.

Apparently all of the fuel is the 'same' at the the refinery stage - when it is loaded onto tankers the individual brands squirt in their own additives.

To further confuse as Gizze says the garages are often filled up with different brands - odd really.

The only fuel which is separately produced and delivered is shell optimax.

I just use whatever is around ..... I tend to fill up all over the place - just trying to avoid the motorway services 101p a litre when I filled up at one last week

It is just diesel oil without the additives and without the road duty

Bit dodgy if you don't have oil heating...

BTW, a friend of mine visited the Malvern show and she said Excise were there dipping all the diesels as they entered. They said they were looking for red diesel.

The flaw in your plan is that Buncefield is not one :banned: great tank, it has (had?) lots of little ones.
Blends are different and the supermarkets only know to sell on price so they omit anything even vaguely expensive (have you tasted their 'own brand' beans ).

Having said that, one or two are starting to pick up their act but it will take years to shake off the reputation. Agree with Olli, Shell is consistently the cheapest of the good stuff and easy to get hold of.
No the flaw is in your thinking. All the fuel to Buncefield is delivered by one pipeline from the Norfolk coast run by the British Pipe Line Agency who operate the site with Total and Hertford Oil Storage Limited. They then act as distributors for the major brands.

Are you saying all fuel is the same?

Yes, as it is pumped from the same refinery. The distribution network is relatively simple and the forecourts are indepently run from production. Hence my previous comments questioning when the addatives are introduced.
