XPosting from E61 Discussion

Just went to do my first fill up from the smelly pump.
I used to use Shell Optimax in my Subaru, but I'm not sure if there are good/bad brands of diesel fuel.
Anyone noticed any differences ?

Also, can the 530d use biodiesel (I'll be asking my dealer this one too).

Cheers
Nick

I think the pick of the bunch is BP ultimate diesel but it's hard to get hold of  . Otherwise Shell is the next best thing however there is no "Optimax" version of their diesel. Keep off the supermarket stuff

Keep away from biodiesel if you can. The modern diesels are really sensitive to fuel and you don't want to be experimenting. In Poland the Shell brand equivalent for Optimax is V-Power. We get V-Power 95, V-Power 99+ and also a V-Power diesel as well as regular diesel. I use this stuff - can't say I see any difference but makes me feel better.

I think they sell main stream fuel but it doesnt have the same additives as the Shell type brands
and I always get better mpg with Shell rather than Tesco

I constantly tank Shell, firstly cause there is one very convenient to my office and in addition the cheapest in miles.
Not too much a believer of the extraordinaryly expensive Ultimate etc., but saying that whenever in Germany and going through Holland, I tank Shell V-power diesel.

The supermarket stuff is supposed to be picked up from the same refineries, but I don't know and it's probably in your head anyway not to believe it.

There are only about 7 refineries in the UK and all the major fuel companies use the same storage and distribution facilities i.e. Stanlow, kingsbury, formerly Buncesfield etc. Rember that virtually all garages in the South East were at risk when Buncefield went up! So fuel is much the same in my book.

So, this leaves one big question, how do Shell / BP etc get the addatives in?

The flaw in your plan is that Buncefield is not one :banned: great tank, it has (had?) lots of little ones.
Blends are different and the supermarkets only know to sell on price so they omit anything even vaguely expensive (have you tasted their 'own brand' beans ).

Having said that, one or two are starting to pick up their act but it will take years to shake off the reputation. Agree with Olli, Shell is consistently the cheapest of the good stuff and easy to get hold of.
