i think it was something to do with the turbo's as most of the damage caused is on that side of the engine. to be honest i dont know a lot about that engine. it was my first bmw! Im defo up for another 5 series (m5 i think)

turbo side gets dam hot as its also the exhaust manifold side I think! did you notice any loss in performance before you saw the flames / smoke?

yes i was driving along on the motorway and i lost loads of power as if the turbos had packed in! i slowed down and noticed a lot of smoke and sparks coming from the rear so i pulled over and as id just about stopped i noticed the orange glow coming from under the bonnet! and it all just went rapidly down hill from there

Main thing is your safe the insurance will hopefully take care of the rest and you can look at an M5 soon!!

And a BMW 325 e90 (Business),
could have been a high pressure side oil leak at the turbo.. that will burn like hell. And eventuallly Diesel feul once lit, will burn damn hot and hard.. too bad on he carthough.. glad you are OK..
