My car was updated to CIP 20.01 more than a week ago and when I booked the service I asked them to enable MP3 if possible. After my car was programmed I was told that my cars hardware does not support MP3, so did not enable it.

Today the dealer phoned me and told me that MP3 can be enabled, but it will cost me ?100.
They told me that it would have been free if I had asked it when bringing the car in for the sw update. But I did...

This is not first time something like this happens, they always fail to write down what they are asked to do. At least I know to take my car elsewhere next time...

Did you have to pay for enabling MP3 playback if it was done same time with sw update?

I didn't have to pay for it. Just had it done this week.

Yes, I had to pay for MP3. Mine was added after an upgrade to Progman (CIP) 20.01 to fix other problems. The upgrade was treated as warranty work, but the MP3 coding was not. This was on a car with 01/05 build date - so not officially supported according to the BMW technical info (though it does work nicely). Cost was ?84 plus VAT - so about the same as you've been quoted. I think the SIB that's elsewhere on this site says the work is warranty work in the US for cars from 03/05. Since my car is older than that I didn't question the charge but now you have me thinking.

I was not charged for activating the mp3 player a couple of weeks ago (E61 06-2004)

Cheers

Yes, I lost .5 or more secs. in the 1/8 mile. Paid no money, though, on my 4/05 build.

No charge at all to enable/update CIP 20.00 for MP3 reading.

I'm in the UK and have recently got MP3 playback enabled on my car which is registered 09/04 (don't know the build date) and I didn't pay anything.

It could be that I took it back to the place I bought my car from and it was a different dealer who upgraded me to CIP20 (they claimed it would not work).

Have a read through the document in the link below, it implies it should be covered under warranty but I'm not sure whether a dealer can claim for both a CIP upgrade and MP3 enable, anyone know?

If you bought your car from the dealer and they are still charging you then I would demand a refund, remind them of how much money you spent buying the car in the first place and whether they want your business for the next one.

My car was undated to CIP 20.02 on Thursday, but I do not have MP3 playback. The service manager did not have a clue about MP3 playback, so I called another dealer. He was clueless as well! BMW NA was supposed to research whether my vehicle could play MP3's and call me back, but that has not happened either. I sent the SA the PDF document with the instructions for enabling MP3, but he has not called me back. What do I have to do to get MP3 playback?

Dealer ought to have vehicles in stock - E90s or E60s - that do have working MP3. See if you can test your MP3 CD in one of those to make sure your CD is made right. Not that you would not make it correctly, but I have seen lots of threads with bad burns, bad CD-Rs, improper coding. I would have thought u might even have had MP3 from the get go depending on build date.

I called the service department at the dealer that I purchased from (not the dealer who did the 20.02 programming to fix emission recall) and they want 350 dollars to enable MP3 playback! Got a call into my salesman.
