I was curious as to how far you can push the envelope when your fuel display indicates Empty --------- . I had a situation last night where I got down to 1 or 2 miles left to Empty and then the "-------" displayed briefly before going back to 1 as I pulled into the filling station. The car took 17.5 gallons. What exactly is the tank capacity on the E60? Will it run dry before the engine stalls or is there still some "sludge" at the tank bottom (which would be included in any measurement of tank capacity)?

Tank capacity is 18.5 gallons.
It is stupid to run it down to below 30 miles to empty, you can actually do damage to the fuel pump, which I imagine aint cheap to fix on our cars

Can you explain this? I almost always let it cycle through a full tank. Are there symptoms of a fuel pump on its way out, or does it just stop working?

As other posters have advised, I do not recommend running into the reserve capacity of the tank on a regular basis.

Mine has been more like 42 miles.
lol! Thanks, Jay. You'll give me a ride, won't you?
But seriously, I don't generally do this on a regular basis. It's just that sometimes I wait until I'm in an area where I can buy Premium 20 cents + cheaper a gallon.
Thanks for all your advice, guys!

I always fill up when it reach down 1/4. I only use shell so when it is close to 1/4 I start looking for a shell station.
