I was curious as to how far you can push the envelope when your fuel display indicates Empty --------- . I had a situation last night where I got down to 1 or 2 miles left to Empty and then the "-------" displayed briefly before going back to 1 as I pulled into the filling station. The car took 17.5 gallons. What exactly is the tank capacity on the E60? Will it run dry before the engine stalls or is there still some "sludge" at the tank bottom (which would be included in any measurement of tank capacity)?

Tank capacity is 18.5 gallons.
It is stupid to run it down to below 30 miles to empty, you can actually do damage to the fuel pump, which I imagine aint cheap to fix on our cars

Can you explain this? I almost always let it cycle through a full tank. Are there symptoms of a fuel pump on its way out, or does it just stop working?

Every now and then I check the level of gasoline remaining when the reserve light comes on. On average, considering we have a 18.5 gal tank, after the reserve comes on I have between 2.5 and 3 gallons of gas left (meaning when if I fill up immediately - it takes about 15.5 and 16 gallons to refill. Usually, my OBC [on board computer] indicates that I have about 60 miles to empty ... and that usually synchs up with my average mpg. That assures I know about how far I can drive until I start walking

As other posters have advised, I do not recommend running into the reserve capacity of the tank on a regular basis.

Can also do damage to cats.

+1 on the 60 miles when the gas light comes on.

Almost exactly.

lol! Thanks, Jay. You'll give me a ride, won't you?

But seriously, I don't generally do this on a regular basis. It's just that sometimes I wait until I'm in an area where I can buy Premium 20 cents + cheaper a gallon.

Thanks for all your advice, guys!

Other than adding gas, is there anything special that need to be done if you do run it empty? How about the diesels?

I always fill up when it reach down 1/4. I only use shell so when it is close to 1/4 I start looking for a shell station.
