Hi guys

I got a "Low Engine Oil" message today on the way back home. It said on the i-drive screen "ADD 1 Ltr of Oil", so I popped into a BP petrol station and bought a 1Ltr bottle of Castol Edge 0W-30 and put it all in.
Like this one

I did this on impuls, then I thought to myself I may have put in the wrong viscosity?! I knew BMW recommends Castrol (Well, it says so on the Oil compartment lid), but not so sure if the 0W-30 is the right oil for my engine

What do you guys think

Thank you

That's a LL01 oil looking at the spec. You need to check the manual.

I believe my 535d needs LL04 which, in UK Castrol terms, would be Castrol Edge Sport 0W-40.

Olli535d is the Guru in all this.

Just checked page 188 of manual - Petrol Engines LL01 (or LL04) so good one!

Thanks for the prompt reply. The manual says LL01 preferred, which is the one I used.

What I am not sure about is the vescosity of the oil I used 0w-30 and if BMW is using the same in service.
I am not concerned about mixing brands of oil Castrol or Mobil but I would be worried about mixing grades I recon.

Following the Castrol link you provided, you can search for the proper oil for your car. Low and behold the Castrol Edge 0w-30 oil is the one that pops up for the 530...

What I'm wondering is: if the computer says add 1 liter, do you do it? I would verify the low level first, add a little, check again etc. It seems a leap of faith to just trust a computer. Especially a computer that seems to be very 'flexible' in its readings of service intervals.

Best,
Bouke

On a 530i, this is perfectly fine and the choice of many BMW outfits, not only due to their advertising agreement with Castrol.
One more thing on those latest fully synthetic oils, especially for top ups. They are all mixable without the slightest problem.
No matter if you have a 0w-40, 5w-30 or 0w-30 or 5w-40. They all mix very well. So no worries if you need to top up at another time and you can only get Mobil 1 0w-40 or similar LL01 approved. Just don't use a semi or a mineral for top up in a fully syn run engine.
The other way round again, would work.

Problem is there is no dipstick in the '06 530 as I recall. Have to take the computer at its word I'm afraid...

Thanks Oliver

I was a bit worried there. I'll make sure I keep a 1Ltr bottle in the boot for future topup.

Didn't realize that possibility
Does the 520d (current engine) also has to do without dipstick?
