What about these insurance issues??? Are they real? Do Ms cost more to insure? Is it related to higher value car? A fully loaded M3 comes close in value to a new fully loaded 550i so that seems a little weird!

With out a doubt, I would buy the M3 over any of those choices! The 5's are fun, but just miss that power and excitement of an M3. There are very few days that go by that im glad i sold my M3 for the 545i. GL

Wow..theres much support for the M3 on the E60 Forums!! Having driven both, I think the M3 offers much more than the M5 does in terms of "fun" driving. The M5 is fun but it's still a much longer wheelbase. The M3 really lets you cut in and out, make quick turns and feel as if you are in total control of the car...
Anyone else driven an M3 and an M5? Opinions???

One data point - my 997 didn't cost me much more to insure than my 550 so I doubt an M3 would be any different.

I'm keeping mine until at least October, then the warranty runs out. Depends on how much it'll cost to renew. If it's something like $300 then cool. If it's more like $3,000 then screw it. I'm selling up and buying myself a 10 year old Toyota Corolla GTi or something.

. . . says the guy with 8 BMW's in his sig. Somehow, I don't see a Toyota in your future.
I chose the Toyota Corolla in that message just as an example of a cheap, reliable box that will get the job of getting from A to B done and won't cost anything to own/run.
Considering that I work from home and drive only about 6,000 miles per year (and half of those are currently probably just because I'm enjoying driving the cars I have so I'll go out just for a fun drive), it's rather pointless having a car costing many thousands of $$$$ and depreciating heavily. I'd be served much better by replacing those fun drives with getting the mountain bike out of the garage and having a fun ride instead. Basically I only "need" to drive places 2-3 times a week, for maximum of an hour usually, and anything that reliably starts and has air-con and some doors will get that job done. If I want to go for a fun drive, the wife's Golf 6 with DSG/paddles and 160bhp is plenty of fun.
Wow, I've really talked myself into offloading my car once October time comes. Damn, I love my 545, don't make me sell it. But I'm not making you, it was your own logic that brought you to this decision. What? I've decided already now? I thought we were just talking about how dumb it was to keep that car, not about really selling it. Sorry, you talked yourself into it. Hold on there buddy, let's step back and think about this a bit more. As you can see, I'm having something of an internal fight between one side of me that loves my 545 and doesn't want to sell it, and the other side that wonders why TF I have that car depreciating like crazy when I don't make full use of it. I suppressed the third side of me that just wants to go and buy a new M5 a while back
