Those upcoming expenses are nothing compared to the depreciation on the newer car

+1...if we're really talking about money then the smart choice is to keep your 545i...im keeping mine for several more years

My Ride: 2011 550i AW - every option
I think the M3 or 335 option is a serious move. I test drove the new M3 and I felt like i was going to suffocate.
I'm not a heavy set guy or anything either, just normal/average I suppose. The 5 series provides an all around ownership experience.
You have a great sedan with handling, power, etc etc.
If you need to make a change, I say go for the M5. From what I've read, it will feel like a completely different experience from the 545i.
In the end, all of your options cost more than just maintaining your 545i. I just crossed over the 111k marker. Sure ive had some issues here and there, but overall the car is a champ. I'd rather spend a few grand a year at most keeping it in shape and milking it than go buy a car which costs more.
I guess I'm a buy and hold kind of guy. I bought my other cars with super low miles also and some are approaching 200k miles.
To each their own. thats my 2 cents.

Hmm...so if we were to look at just money, then the sensible thing to do is to hold on to the car. The trade-in value is only about 20-22K so it's worth a lot lesser than what it's worth to me, if you know what I mean....
The thought I have is this - maintainence can be a bitch though I have the extended warranty till 100K. Even with this - not everything is included. For example, the tie rods and the springs need changing and thats a 1K job. Not to mention the new tyres that will need to be bought more sooner than later. Though the car runs well at this time, I have also heard the dreaded 'clicking' noise coming from the engine a few days ago. Makes me worry about there being bigger issues and the cars value plummeting soon.
I too am a buy and hold on kinda guy which is why this makes it so much more difficult. The M3 has phenomenal reviews and didn't feel that claustrophobic to me when I drove it. The convertible, though lovely, is out because I need some kind of a trunk (for the golf clubs at least). So the coupe makes sense. The 335 is great from 0-80 but fades rapidly thereafter which (after driving the V8), makes it that much more unappealing.
What are these insurance issues people speak of? Is insuring an M that much more difficult? Note - I am not worried about tranny or SMG or diff issues with the M3 as the car will be leased and that becomes their problem!!!!

Life is far too short to always make the sensible choice. If we did, we'd all be driving a Camry.
