Batteries Plus sells a exact fit battery that has accommodations for the vent tube for $200

Well, the dealers aren't always wrong

They just have a funny way of going about doing things and in the process put the fear of god in you. They mostly try the "complicated - doesn't make sense" route that usually leaves the client either angry at the thought of being ripped off or not have any faith in what they are saying! their loss!

Glad you got the issue sorted without any drama ;-)

These explosions can and do happen even to under-hood batteries. The hydrogen gas, being lighter than air, builds up under the hood. If you happen to get a spark when opening the hood... Blooey! Happened to a friend of mine. Blew out the side of the battery and sprayed sulfuric acid all over the engine bay.
