Here's the diagram:

The hose comes with the battery or attaches to an outlet on the battery? I thought the vent hose stayed in the car and you removed the battery and hooked up another to the same hose? In essence, the battery has a vent hole, but the car has the hose? No?

exactly. but some batteries don't have the vent hole. that's where the OP's issue is.

here's a close up of the tube:

Can you blow up that jpg a bit? It's a bit hard to see with such a small picture.

Aftermarket batteries *with* vent tubes are available for BMW's. I just picked up one a few years ago for my 3er.

So my 2004 530i was at the dealer yesterday and today to seal up the vent that is located in the trunk in the battery compartment because...... it was accumulating water. Thats right! WATER, about 3" of it... near the heart of ALL the electrical components in the car! How freaky is that? Well apparently this was a known issue and BMW released a bulletin on it or whatever. My dealer was nice enough to fix the problem under my CPO, (but its normally only covered under factory).

To get to the point... the dealer said they were concerned they noticed an Interstate battery there and not an OEM one. I said: "why? Its either I replace it via you for $330 or via myself for $80." They are exact specs as OEM. Well the "service advisor" stated that the OEM battery has a vent tube but the aftermarket does NOT. Therefore, the problem with that is acid cannot drain when the battery becomes hot or whatever and it can cause corrosion at the top of the connectors, etc.

You guys confirm this? I mean, am I going to burn a damn hole in my trunk from battery acid seeping all over the place, end of the world scenario like the dealer made it sound?

One posted the following:

if you mean the grey one, that is the vent tube. it goes out of the car. you need to connect this to prevent the buildup of hydrogen in the trunk.
So if there is excess buildup of hydrogen in the trunk, whats the big deal if I open my trunk up every couple of days and close it? Same thing ya? VENTAROOOOOOOOOOO! !??!

Just tell me the dealer is full of it and I'm not going to corrode my electronics because my battery can't pass gas? lol

the dealer is giving you the corporate line. which model interstate do you have? we can look it up and see if it has a vent hole. it should if it's the same size as the factory one. the ones you get at batteries plus (that werkes black one posted in this thread) definitely have the hole, and you can just re-use the elbow and rubber hose from the factory battery. I've done that on several BMWs now.
