My Ride: 535d M Sport - Visibilty, Media, Logic7, Heated Comfort Seats, too many other extras to list
If it adds any clarity, I have a 2005 registered UK non LCI.
When I turn on DRL in my iDrive, it just means that if I turn my headlight switch on to ON, when I stop the engine the lights go out and when I start the engine they come on again, (by "lights" I mean, dipped beam xenon, angel eye rings and the orange eyebrow thing).
If I turn off the DRL option in my iDrive, it behaves like any other Uk car and the lights stay on even when I turn off my engine and remove my key. I have to actually turn the lights off at the dial to get them to go out.
(Note, I also have auto lights but this si something else totally to what I am talking about.)
I think your USA cars behave totally different to ours.

For LCI cars the angle eyes rings/halos are Daytime Driving lights which can be turned on and off in your idrive.
For pre-LCI cars the inner bulb ( the "?") is the day time running lights which can not be turned off or on by idrive but only by your dealer, except for cars built in September 06 which had some changes which I guess included the daytime running lights on/off options.

In that picture, for my 2009 528i, it's the same and the question mark is for my front adaptive lights (that turn on when you turn corners at night)

My Ride: 2005 545iA
My previous 2003 E60 530i did not have that function in idrive at first, but with software update it came and also the mp3 support etc. :-) The car had business navi. The 05 545 i drive now had that menu item already, but no mp3 support, so i had to update anyways. I have pro navi.

My Ride: Just gone-520d m sport- Jet Black- Dakota Leather black- AluCube interior,
On order- F10 520d SE-Titanium Silver
Help. I can activate/deacticate DRL from my IDrive however as far as I can see it makes no difference to the lights, ie nothing happens. What is meant to happen when DRL is activated? Whether DRL is on or off, with the light switch in position 3 the lights come on when I start the car and go off when I take the key out. If this is the DRL function it works whether DRL is activated or not from I Drive.
