Well, I'm coming up on the one year anniversary for my 2005 530i and I recieved a letter from BMW asking if I cared to extend my BMW Assist subscription (being as I declined to give them my credit card number when I bought the car). I thought about it and realized that I never used it in the past 10 months. To cut to the chase, I tried the SOS button in the car and after about three minutes nothing happened except my Lat./Long. position came up on the Idrive followed by "Data Transmission Fault" error message. I tried it several times and at different locations, e.g. work, home, and it still did not work. Has this happened to anyone else?

BMW did not extend the subscription time on my BMW Assist, even though the system did not work for about 2 months.

My Ride: '04 545iS 6 spd, bought new via eBay, 11/05; Blk/Gry, Cold, L7, PDC, BMW Rear seatcover for pets.
First "Bumwa" was a new 1971 2002. High performance 5s since 1987. Beamer motorcycles too, currently on an 07 BMW K1200 GT; also a Moto Guzzi 1000 SP III.
I got one of those as I was driving home from the dealer. Not knowing what the hell it was, I just ignored it. Later, I checked on the service screen and it showed "reported" with the date. When I went in for service last week, it turned up on the service record for the car. So, at some point it got its act together and transmitted it.
I gather that this dubious service expires after a year, right? I resented it from the moment I heard about it. I'm perfectly capable of noting my car's needs. Now, if it would stop falsing on me (windows, passenger seat air bag warnings etc.) we might be able to develop a relationship.

I guess I'll just let it go and not bother with it. Hopefully, if I get in a wreck and my airbag goes off some kind citizen will call the paramedics for me. Actually, everything else seems to working OK. I don't really want to take it to the dealer to have him look at it. All he will do is screw around with the software and leave the car with me to find out what goes wrong next. Needless to say I think I will pass on extending my "BMW Unassist"

Well if you dont extend BMW Assist and pay the $200 fee I dont think it'll call BMW Assist if you get in a wreck anyways... so it wont work either way... I wouldnt bother with it if thats the case...

It surprises me that BMW can't get their assist feature to work as well as OnStar. I never had a problem with that on my last car.

I'm one of thre early owners, and got pissed off at the Assist when I called and they wanted $5 to tell me what the weather report was. Realized that I hadn't used it in some time. Couldn't figure out what they wanted me to pay $200 a year for. Pile of crap.

I got "Data Transmission Fault" in Service Notification of IDrive yesterday and today. Today, when I try to do "Update Service" (several times), it always waited for very long time and most of time it eventually start to update and updated ok but there is one occasion transmit is abourted and this message is thrown. It used to update pretty quickly.
My free BMW Assist expired 6 months ago and I haven't got this message until yesterday. Bluetooth seems to be working fine.
Do you think its a faulty TCU?
