Damaged Tyre

So I've just upgraded to 172 alloys (pics to follow) and I removed my old 18 M-Sport alloys. I knew that the back tyres were down to about 2mm (still legal in the UK) but I didn't expect to see this on the inside edge...

The worst thing is that me car was in the dealers less than 2 weeks before for it's 'check up' service and it wasn't spotted. Needless to say I won't be using that dealer again. From what I can tell they barely give it a once over, the wheels certainly hadn't been off the car. If they are going to check the car over then surely they should be looking for major and dangerous faults like this.

Wow, that looks bad. If it only happened on the inside edge, then the alignment on your wheels might be the problem. You should have that checked out.

Damn! You can see the air in that tire!
I don't want to hear about incomplete service. My car is due it's 65k Vehicle Service Check and I hate to think
they just open the hood, wipe the dust off the valve cover, spin it around the lot a couple times, and give it back.
When your car has issues that will lead to impending failure, (your tire in fact), one would hope the dealer could be a little more diligent in their service.

Hi Tunbridge,
Im guessing you took it to Preston Hall?
It looks to me as though your tyre has been rubbing on something and the only thing anywhere near that part of the tyre would be your wheel arch.
I suppose you would have noticed damage to your wheel arch if it had have been rubbing enough to cause that sort of damage.
When I bought my E60 from PH I noticed a 6 series next to me with a big bulge in the tyre wall, didnt look very professional.

I only took it in there to get the stamp in my service book, I just can't believe how little they actually do, I think an MOT would have been more comprehensive (and alot cheaper).
I'll have to have a good look under the car for any signs of rubbing. I've had my hand inside the arch but can't feel anything unusual. More worrying the 172's im now running are wider rears so that won't help.

+1, its just as much as the drivers responsibility to check your own tire, oil, air pressure, wiper fliuds and any other maintenance.
