I have a 520D and the noise is starting to bother me. I like the torque and feel of the diesel engine but when I pull up to a stoplight, that 'ta-ta-ta-ta' sound drives me crazy... I can be 20 meters away and still hear that thing!

I don't know but does your D engine make that much noise? I wonder if the Benz CDI and the Audi TDI are as noisy but I'm sure mine is really noisy!

Mine is pretty quiet (520d LCI, before engine change). It's quieter than the CDI or TDI. I have the feeling that the noise level has increased somewhat around the 20.000 km mark, but still I'm very pleased with the low sound level.

Too loud but too fun to give up.. I love it.. But the worst time for me is when I enter or exit a parking lot where I have to roll down my windows and get the ticket or pay for parking, I hate the sound my engine makes... It sounds awful.. But again, too fun to give up..

For sure, it's difficult to compare a 4 to a 6 "legs" but even cold, I'm fully happy about mine.

Check your oil level and top up if low - in my experience low oil can add to the noise at tickover......

Agree on that one. My dads E61 is LCI and is really quiet on the inside, maybe starting her up in the winter but thats it!
