My Ride: 2002 545i sport pckg,sirius,active steering,grey on black
Had a chance to unwind on I-68 in western Maryland[a great 4 lane highway
where you can maintain very high speeds for long periods..many sweepers
through the mountains and great views too]. The problem was crosswinds that
required frequent annoying steering inputs resulting in a twitchy feel. BMW
apparently feels that this is such a problem that Autoweek says they deleted
Active Steering from the new M5! Any ideas or suggestions? Can I retroactively
disable AS? My previous 540i[Sports] had a much steadier feel while in warp
drive.

Yeah, they should make it an option to turn of AS. I'm sure alot of ppl would like that option.

I agree, more of an active steering issue. I have driven my car across the Causeway, a 24 mile bridge over our lake, with 25+ mph cross winds, and felt very little impact. I have heard other with similar comments about cars w/ AS in strong winds.

What it seems like is happening is AS is making corrections for the crosswinds, then I react to the corrections, so in effect, it's back to the old ways of corrective steering input in winds, which I think AS was supposed to help with. Seems like human nature's gotten the best of us.
I vote for an AS off button, too. Would be good for valets, etc who drive the car and aren't used to it.

I thought AS worked differently than described above.
at low speeds, a little input results in large movements. at high speeds, a larger input results in smaller movements, exactly for stability at high speeds. what gives? I just read the e60 brochure, and that's how I understood it.
please explain.
