I have 52k miles now and over the past 2 months I have developed a creaking noise when the car is in motion and I turn left. There is no noise when I am stationary and turn. I brought it to the dealer yesterday and my SA told me they had another e60 with a similar problem. They were replacing the steering rack to see if it remedied the noise. He later called me and said that the steering shaft was loose and needed to be replaced costing $778. He is awaiting approval from my extended warranty company. I'm pretty sure they will cover it, but may be hesitant since they have paid out $6000 on previous repairs.

Lesson: BUY AN EXTENDED WARRANTY!!

LOL....Actually $6k isn't that bad...Mind you that these were dealer repairs so the mark up is incredible. 1 repair was the a/c condenser and the other was valve and timing cover gaskets. At a local shop it would have been 1/2 the price.

We have the same car (05 545), same color (jet black too), nearly the same amount of miles (57k) and the same problem! I've clocked a little over 57k miles on mine and about a month ago I hear the same creaking/knocking only turning left. I wont hear it all the time and never when turning right, but as soon as I approach some dip while turning left, niose is automatic. Thank goodness for extended warranty; mine expires this July. I better take advantage of it. Good luck

They shouldn't be hesitant to pay for it. They are bound to pay for it by contract. You were not hesitant when you paid your premium. Serve them the bill and smile

I think it's a common problem, especially since they had another e60 with the same issue getting repaired! Check your valve gasket for oil leaks before your warranty runs out!

Thanx for the tip! My valve cover looks fine for now. There's actually a number of things they need to check out, one being the "ticking" noise I hear from originating somewhere under the valve covers

I just realized my warranty (EasyCare) actually expires in 2012!! Lucky me

OMG..... 50 some thousand miles and $6,000 worth of repairs - even if it's under warranty. Makes me wonder if I should keep mine. My car has just a tad over 50,000 miles, so far it's been routine maintenance (except for the creaking doors - fixed just before warranty expired). You guys are scaring me.

Keep it and get an extended warranty. Bare in mind that Dealerships charge a premium....expect at least $1000 for every repair. Indy mechs will charge less if you can find a good one.

Went to pick it up today after a week at the stealership...Weird thing happens..SA wants me to ride with the mechanic to see if the $800 new steering axle resolved the noise...guess what??? THE NOISE IS STILL THERE!! Can you believe that? They must've known it wasn't fixed! MEchanic says "it must be the strut bracket Mr. Lo...we'll get you in a loaner." Damn right you are! So my warranty company paid out for a new steering axle that wasn't the fix. I did notice that my backrest seat motor was failing when I tried to adjust my seat...."Don't worry about it Mr. Lo. We'll take care of it."

In summary, after 7 days at the dealership: car is still at the shop, warranty company paid out $800 for incorrect fix, SA knew they screwed the pooch, my seat motor is broken, but they gave me a loaner! Needless to say, me and the loaner are gonna have some fun.
