Realized today that my windshield had cracked in two places. No stone chips.

One crack was starting at the roof and going downwards below the rain sensor and then up again, in a nice curve.

The other one started on the passengers side halfways up and 10 cm in it turns upwards another 10 cm!

Really strange on a car with 7000 km and only normal town and highway driving.

The thing that bothers me is how the car will be with new windshield installed.
Noise etc.

Is the aluminum front to weak creating tensions in the windshield frame / window?

Have to wait 2 - 3 weeks for a new one getting here from Germany.

Special winshield because of the HUD!

Wow, that is disturbing! It must be because of stress from the window frame that is either not matched up with the window form, or flexing that is happening with the car's structure.

It could be that the glass is not formed to the correct shape, but if it is glued in place, it sould just stay in that location. More likely, there is movement of the area supporting the windshield thereby forcing it to flex too much.

I suppose it could also be a weak piece of glass if the process was not controlled well......

But whatever it is, it's not a good feeling....

cidair

Mine cracked in exactly the same place (left half of the screen - as seen from the inside), BMW replaced it under warranty , no quibble. I would have normally have gone through my insurance.

I will keep an eye on mine

Hi Cidar,

When I talked to my Tech some time ago we talked about the HUD. And he told my that they had some problems with cracking windshields.

The real problem, he said, was installing the windshield correct in regards to the HUD. He said it was pretty hard getting the HUD as sharp as it was when the car had its original windshield. He said it was like having some other persons glasses on!!! A little blur......

All the best,

Michael , Malm?.

Anything new about the standard exhaust from your 545i?

Just got the car back with new windshield. HUD function was as good as before.

Big relief!! Was a little bit nervous abou how it would turn out.

BUT - always some surprise when you collect the car at your dealer!

I found the upper rubber frame not to be fitted properly, you could see a line across the entire roof where the old one had been - not nice!

HERE COMES THE WORST PART - the whole door side was covered with some silver spray. Plastic panels, handle, buttons AND leather

On the outside there is this metallic spray on all black parts - mirror fittings, shadow line trim, rubber parts etc.

TOTALLY FRUSTRATING!!

What to do! Found it out yesterday - first day of holiday trip.

On monday the dealer will definitely know that he is alive!

Just found out that the entire roof is covered with the same stuff. Looks like silver paint but it hasn?t stuck too hard to the paint.

Don?t know what it is? Will find out tomorrow hopefully!

Mine cracked today on the motorway - no external impact noticed - just a crack as described above! "One crack was starting at the roof and going downwards below the rain sensor and then up again, in a nice curve"..... off to the dealer tommorow....
