Hi all

So this morning I'm on the motorway and a lorry throws up a nice big rock, cracking my windscreen

I need to get this replaced - my concern is that I have the rain-sensor which appears to be attached to the windscreen. Do I need to take the car to BMW to replace the screen without damaging the unit?

Or, (and I hope this is the case), is the rain-sensor not physically attached to the windscreen, and it's a simple case of replacing the glass?

Hope someone can help!

cheers

Shi

I had mine replaced by Autoglass recently, through insurance. The Autoglass fitter told me that the windscreen is only available from BMW, basically he picked it up from the dealer then fitted it at my workplace. All of the sensors etc. are already attached to the glass, the mirror & sensor moulding just bolted on to the windscreen..

Thanks! Was this covered under the usual ?50 no-claims-bonus-unaffected policy or did you have to do a "full" insurance claim?

Windshields are a structural part of the car's body. (we've all heard the grousing about creaks and groans on factory glass). I would strongly urge you to have the dealer do the replacement so that it is warrantied. I learned this the hard way over the years, especially, when a 3rd party replaced my E39 windshield with faulty sealant and the leak ruined my electronics control box under the dash board. They made good on it, but I would not have had this problem through the dealer.

Just a thought and caution,
Ray Hull

I would also repair it only at the dealers.

Important not only for the features but also for the safty features.
