I was out of town over the weekend and on the way home last evening I noticed an 8" crack in the lower lefthand corner of the windshield. I cannot recall any impact on the windshield and it was not there when I parked it before starting my trip home. It was a very hot day (105) and I wonder if this may have had something to do with it. I've read where BMW windshields are easily chipped and cracked. I do not see an impact sight from pebbles or stones. The edge is involved and it is large enough that it probably will need replacement. I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar experiance.

If there is no impact, just the crack, it is most likely a stress fracture.
If that's the case you can get it replaced under warranty, but your dealer will probably try to tell you it is a stone chip. So you need to convince him that it's not a stone chip.

A lot of us have. Take a ball point pen and run it along the crack, if it does not find an impact then BMW will replace under warranty.

Yup, I've had it happen too. I was in Georgia, US in March. Temperature was around 30 degrees C (about 90 F). Started in the lower left (while looking out the windscreen). I first noticed it when it was 3 inches long. By the time we returned to Toronto a few days later, it was almost 2' long.

My dealer was great. They agreed that there was no stone chip and replaced the windscreen.

Good luck.

Same here, lower left again and BMW replaced it under warranty, I said that I had been into the windscreen repair shop and they said it was a stress fracture not a stone chip and they didn't want to turn business away but it should be a warranty claim. BMW didn't argue with this.
