I can confirm that with the M5 the rev limiter corresponds to the lower rpm during warm up - you can not rev past the redline, which increases as the car warms.

I didn't know for sure, but thanks to this post I was inspired to leave my office and take may car for a spin to verify....just another benenfit of the e60 forum.
Thanks for confirming things for us -- I thought I remembered reading that things worked that way but began to doubt myself. Now we just need to find someone with an M5 cluster in a non-M, non-automatic car...

...a brief period of idle after start (15 seconds or so), then a slow drive (perhaps 30 mph max) to get the transmission and differential fluids flowing into the crevices.
I let the car idle for about 30 seconds, but then don't have the option to drive slow. I'm about 300 yards off a highway (60 mph average) with very heavy traffic and almost no sight line -- so have to hit it hard. Less than a mile later is the ramp merging to the left lane of I-75. In rush hour traffic the average speed is well over 80 mph. On a really good day, for 21 miles I stay 80-90 never touching the brakes (not that I wouldn't consider trading my easy commute for SoCal weather and traffic that goes with it!).

I've never had engine problems, but I feel bad for the car every day it is really cold and try to stay below 4,000 rpm. Not a lot of options though -- go fast or get run over around here.
