I had this message appear earlier this year. Drove to the dealer and they topped it off. While we were at it, I also had them top off the windshield wiper fluid.

I have been getting the Coolant Low message since last week and this was after I hadn't driven the car for ~3 weeks (vacation). Plan to drive to the dealer one of these days to get it topped off.

I bought a large container of BMW coolant from Bavauto to top off myself - I think it takes a 50% dilution and I think one should use distilled water in any radiator. For what it's worth, my dealer "topped off" the fluids and for the first time, when I started the car after a half-hour rest, the cooling fan went on a super-high noisy speed I have not heard before or since. When I got home and it cooled off, I found the expansion tank OVERFILLED - the float was stuck all the way up and I took OUT about half a liter to get it down within the normal range.

Just had mine topped off by my service rep. after 10 months and 18,000 miles. He said it was normal for the coolant level to drop and that BMW has pressure testing there coolant stystems and determined it is not a problem. Nothing to worry about. Lucky for me my dealer is just minutes from my office. I just drop in and get top off for any fluids that become low and it only takes minutes and no $$$.

Happened to me around the 10,000 km mark, dealer just filled it up and everything is fine until now which is 17000 km. But I was quite shocked that it got low after 10,000, anyone know if its normal or whats the deal with this low coolant thing?

Soemthing strange I'm not sure if it's related to temperature...

this morning... at 15K my car reported very low levels of coolant... San Diego temp this morning was a historic all time low (35F) when just about 2 weeks ago it was around 75-80...

I'm wondering how much effect does cold temperature play on the coolant/... I thoguht perhaps the coolant froze or something (sounds stupid).. but I don't have a clue.

Coolant expands when hot and contracts when cold so the level changes accordingly which can trip the sensor. I had to add coolant to my 545 last winter when the temp got down in the high 30's F. So what happened to your car is normal. And yes, it was the coldest night in San Diego that I can remember. My water pipes froze for a bit, but didn't burst.

10K miles and gettting coolant low!

I called the dealer and they said to drive the car there. It is like 30 miles each way. I was planning to stop by autozone and get some of that stuff today.

Mine gave me an intermittent warning - just barely low a month or so ago. I just added a tiny bit of distilled water. All is fine.

I wouldn't add any coolant that isn't BMW approved, and certainly would not add regular water if I were you. It should be distilled water so that you don't introduce minerals and other impurities that could harm the system.
