Hey folks. The floating 'level stick' in the coolant expansion tank had started flopping around. I pulled it out and started to wipe it down when it just crumbled in my hands. Is this something I can buy as a part, or is it considered a part of something?

Also does the low level alarm work without it? I have been slowly losing coolant, maybe a quarter cup a day from either the lower radiator hose or the thermostat connection.

thanks in advance,

k

I assume item 2 is what you require. It is required for the level monitoring to function.

i see, thanks. It looks like the white float and the stick are sold as one part. I wonder what is considered the core.

Btw I found out that the low level warning does come on without the stick. It is hard to gauge where the full level is, I filled it till the top of the white float was about even with the overflow.

I can't imagine that it would cost that much to replace. Either your local dealership or Garry should be able to hook you up.

I had the same issue and replaced the entire tank with Part Number 17137542986,
The measuring stick disappeared at around 55K and the red plastic started to disintegrate completely. I could simply break it into further pieces with little or no force whatsoever.

Buy the tank and install it yourself - easy DIY and not that expensive. I don't think there is a way to insert a new float and stick into the tank - it just wont fit, and these tanks are known to leak anywhere from 60-100k miles.

Mine broke while under CPO warranty and they would not fix it. I called BMW NA and they too said it was not covered. About a year later the tank started leaking and they replaced that under warranty. Your take will proaly go soon too..everybodys does
