Hi everyone

The computer indicates (Coolant level is low), sure enough the water in the expansion vessel was low(ish).
So I popped into the dealer & got a 1.5L bottle of BMW antifreeze that needs to be mixed with water (ratio 1:2).

The question is: Can I use normal tap water? Here in the UK, tap water is hard and I am concerned it may cause corrosion?

Someone advised that I can use the water from my condensing dryer! Is that a better idea?

You should only use distilled water in the cooling system to prevent corrosion. Tap water, no matter how good, will still cause damage in the long term.

Had the same thing around 2 months back - bought a bottle from my BMW spares department but was told not to mix it with any water. I added it in straight from the bottle. Been driving it for 2 months since without the warning or any other problem..

Had it with both 545 and 535, BMW coolant in the US is not to be mixed with water.

antifreze is supposed to have anti corrosion capabilites - i doubt tap water is going to do much harm - even if it has some effect, a pint or so over the 3 or so years you have the car would be negligable in effect.

You can buy pre-diluted antifreeze to eliminate your quandry.
