At the risk of sounding paranoid, I find it interesting that my E60 tires noticeably wear out (@20K miles) well prior to my 36 month lease-end, while my E39 (also V-rated Conti touring) tires had life left on them in 36 months. Makes me think that BMW has arranged to force tire replacement before lease end, to save a considerable amount of money across the marque. Just paranoia, of course, but I'm surprised that the tires have crapped out so soon.

You are comparing a touring tire (granted a V-rated) but a touring tire versus a ULTRA-High Performance. Not a High Performance, but a ULTRA High Performance. Completely different treadwear and traction. For the Ultra High Performance you are looking at 20k, maybe 25k.

I am sure at tire purchase time, you can find a better mileage tire, but you will give up traction.

FYI: The Conti Sport Contacts had a very low treadwear rating (160). The new Contact 2's have a treadwear of 280. So, I think the tire manufacturers are starting to get the picture - we want ultra high performance with respectable mileage.

Good info. Thanks.

I don't expect to keep the 5 beyond the lease, so I installed the Contis and will let it go in another 16000n miles.
