The headlights do move slightly, however, the cornering lights are stationary. Their lenses are angled to light up the side...but I don't believe they move.
I just checked, since I now have my 5er on this side of the pond. Indeed, the inner headlights are the cornering lights. They do not move.

The regular (outer) headlights move.

It seems that there is a couple (or more) different movements of light when you turn the wheel...in conjunction with certain speeds. I think we all agree that the bulbs themselves turn to shine light in the direction of turning. Also, when at a stop sign for example, when you begin to move and make a right (or left) hand turn, you can see the side of the road begin to illuminate an "orange" color. This illumination seems to fade ON and fade OFF. I believe it is coming from stationary lights on the side of the outer headlight...if you look, you can see an orange lense in there..by some horizontal bars/reflectors of some sort.

What you're describing is the light output from the inner cornering lights...

As you can see in this picture, when moving slowly forward with the wheel turned to the left (ie when parking) the left inner bulb will lit-up so you can see clearly the area you are moving to. Now, if you put reverse with the wheel at the same direction then the right inner bulb will lit-up and the left will turn off.
Light switch is in the "A" position. This is the adaptive parking lights function (or something like this)

Maybe this is the reason why you are thinking that the inner lights are somehow moving or fading.

Nick's correct except that I think both cornering lights illuminate when you shift into reverse...

OK, now this finally makes sense to me when looking at that picture. Thanks for the explanation Nick, I really was confused as hell after reading the previous posts in this thread!

Whatever it is, I want it. Ive seen it in action on my friends 335 coupe and it's pretty slick. If you take the time to look at the new headlights coming out these days on some new high end cars, they're all pretty trick in their own unique way. The new big Lexus has some pretty neat lights. I believe they're LED's. The new Audi's are pretty cool too. Even MB has some nice lights. Take an up close look at one of these cars next time, pretty interesting.

+1 - they are pretty cool...I see folks looking at my lights all the time when I'm truning or reversing Good luck with your new car and take some pics of the Euro delivery trip...sounds like a real blast!!
