My Ride: MY05 545i Jet Black with Auburn interior. SMG, Logic7, Sport Package, Comfort Seats, Navigation.
My 05 545i SMG just rolled past 20,000 miles today. I am reflecting on all the problems I had until now, and I just realized that I had encountered every single problem listed in this forum. So I rushed to my archive of service receipts and compiled a list.
Please feel free to add to the list any problems you had besides what I encountered, so the rest may be aware of their existence. I think I am just lucky.
1. SMG Transmission replacement (1,600 mi)
2. Pre-mature battery drain
3. I-drive stays on with no key in the ignition. Or it will come on in the middle of night for no reason.
4. Door seal creaks like a wooden ship. (New door seals)
5. Tire roar and uneven wear (replaced for free)
6. Moon roof poping when closing from tilt.
7. Moon roof won't close (after fixing problem #6)
8. Moon roof won't close when going above 50 MPH (after fixing problem #7)
9. Loud whistle coming from the wind shield above 80 MPH
10. Engine tapping noise between 1800-2100 RPM (Cam Chain Tensioner replaced)
11. Engine hesitation when starting in cold days (Vanos intermediate valve replacement)
12. SMG transmission slaming on stop-and-go traffic (CIP 16.1 fixed this)
13. Window trim coming off 2X (replaced clip, then the whole trim on the drivers door)
14. Active steering failure warning (Fixed itself after restarting)
15. Auto Head-Light inconsistency. Won't come on in raining days, but won't shut off on sunny days (no fix).
16. Bad AC smell after turning it off (The dealer sprayed some chemical and it was OK for 2 weeks) I think a lot of cars do that, so I accepted it.
Other than that, I am enjoying my car

I had my car up for sale twice! But regretted afterwards.
I still need a decent car for my work, and I was not willing to waste more money on taxes, if I had bought another car. We californians pay sales tax on 100% of car's price. Not just the trade in difference like many other states. Therefore, it becomes very expensive to drive a new car every 1 or 2 years.

There are three other issues that you haven't yet encountered based on your list.
1. Window anti-trap on passenger side.
2. NAV system going crazy
3. Launch Control aka Acceleration Assist not working after doing 3 consecutive launches.

Quite a number of glitches, but glad your enjoying the E60. I've only had one, a software fix to Active Steer to align the steering wheel. Maybe there's a second. I hear an infrequent tick sound (little pebbles hitting the glass) from the windshield area. Maybe the glass is getting set to crack.
Other than this, no problems.

I thought I had the windshield whistling problem but didn't hear anything last weekend after a few hours of spirited driving. It would seem that it went away or I probably misdiagnosed the sound I had heard a few weeks back.
