justin you might wanna take a look at this post. i think as far as gains go there are none with the AFE system but it seems to be the one that fits the e60 the best. pretty much seems to be a 300 dollar noise maker if you ask me considering the dyno results. there are you tubes of the sound on it though and it sounds pretty good

I really like the Dinan intake. Check it out...also converts from a single inlet to a dual inlet intake.

best intake setup would be the RPI scoops with an aftermarket air filter. there is a package available with the BMC filter.

Step 1, remove the extra carbon filter in the top of the air intake box. (free)
Sept 2, get an RPI Scoop.($100)
Enjoy the higher MPG
Step 3 spend $1200 and get a Dinan CIA and $599 for Software flash
Step 4 call one of the wonderful sponsors and order a right side RPI scoop
Step 5 Enjoy the ?23-25? hp increase????????

Step 1... what does that do to the car? you don't need a carbon filter?

The 550 has two filters in the air box. 1. Is the air filter which the dirt before it enters the engine 2. Ther is another carbonfilter which is fixed in the upper air box which is an "emissions" item. This is there to filter the gas fumes from exiting the engine when you shut it off. This adds more restriction to the inlet and is not designed to filter dirt. There are many posts on this and I have been removing this filter since my 545 and never had an issue.
