I've got coins in the headunit (Logic 7, no nav, 2004 E61 530d). The dealer wanter ?130 to have a go at getting them out with no guarantee of success. It plays CD's for a short time then stops. It can then take ages to get the CD out and once caused a iDrive reboot (a bit frightening when that screen vanishes).

Anyway, I managed to get a head unit from E-bay for about ?40. Is there any re-programming needed or is it a case of removing one and plugging the other in? Looks like alot of trim has to come off to get the old unit out? I know that a new CD changer needed some reprogramming to get it to work with the car so I'm guessing that I'll need the dealers help if I want to fit the e-bay unit in?

Thanks for any advice.

I new headunit is a big upgrade and will definately need a full programme. However I'd suggest first trying to open up the current HU and take the coins out ASAP. Metal objects inside an electronic device is not a good idea and you seem to be using it too

It might be simpler to just remove the existing unit and attempt to get the coins out either by carefully disassembling it or by creatively rotating it until the coins fall out. If you can successfully do that, there shouldn't be any need to replace it.

I'm not 100% sure but I think if you end up using the replacement unit, some reprogramming by the dealer will be neccessary...

EDIT: I stepped away from my computer for a few minutes before I finished typing my reply and I now see that Bruce has confirmed that programming is neccessary and agrees that "plan A" is worth trying.

I've seen that happen to a few PCs as well...

I've used tape wrapped round a piece of plastic of credit card thickness (sticky side out!) to extract foreign objects from drives. It works if its close to the front of the drive...just don't let it stick to anything else in there!

Good luck!

Sorry to hear it. You might be able to just turn the car over and shake the change out. Otherwise, there is a trap door under the car, that allows all the loose change and bills to come out all at once.

Actually, I hate to say it, but I'd leave this one to the dealership. Usually any good stereo shop could swap the head unit, but there is so much integration with iDrive that I wouldn't risk it.

OUCH! It's like the old grilled cheese sandwich in the VCR problem from the recent past!! I agree with Rudy, exhaust ALL options before you replace it outright!!
