I had no trouble at all. No special tools to remove.
I didn't remove all the bits the manual says - just enough to get to the top of the tower in the boot.

That is incorrect. You cant even get springs from the dealer they are special order because the spring size depends on the options that the car was ordered with. Also Msport springs are shorter then normal springs. Its not only the shock that differs.

Yeah, that is not even obscure knowledge - I believe the standard, Sport, and MSport all had unique springs/spring rates.
I think the ride height was similar between the Sport and MSport, even though they had different spring rates, so it's still possible you have a different spring now, but could not tell from looking at the ride height.

I feel your pain ianbmwe60, also had broken rear springs and was lucky to find a set off amazon.com.
Did the replace myself, not at all difficult to do if you can hold a wrench.BUT never go back to that mechanic other than maybe to have him correct current job for you.
Good luck.

Msport is the lowest, sport is "lower", and standard is obviously the standard. The difference between each is small though, especially the Msport to Sport difference. Standard to msport is a decent difference.
